Multiple options exist for the treatment of spider veins. All vein treatments are performed in the comfort of my Albuquerque vein center. For leg veins, we feel that sclerotherapy provides the most effective, most economical, and least painful treatment method.
The gold standard in spider vein treatment, sclerotherapy is a relatively simple treatment that involves injecting an FDA-approved solution directly into the vein via a tiny needle. The sclerosant solution irritates the lining of the vein and causes it to collapse. The vein is reabsorbed and fades over the course of 4-6 weeks. Some areas will require more than one treatment to achieve full fading. Even though it does involve the use of needles, most patients experience little discomfort. Following treatment, I recommend patients apply Arnica gel twice daily for bruising. Generally, normal activities can be resumed immediately after sclerotherapy, and “pounding” activities, such as running, can be resumed one week post-treatment. Medically prescribed compression stockings are worn for 2-3 after each treatment session. Most patients require 3-5 treatments, but the actual number will vary with every person.
Veinwave™ is a revolutionary technique used to eliminate fine facial spider veins. The technique utilizes thermo-coagulation to treat tiny spider veins typically less than 0.3mm, which are too small to be injected with sclerosing agents. With Veinwave, an ultra-thin needle emits radiofrequency energy into the vein, which damages the vein causing it to fade. Veinwave provides a relatively quick procedure, with minimal discomfort and no risk of bruising, scarring or pigmentation. Patients can also resume activity immediately following the treatment with no down-time.
