Are Varicose Veins Genetic?

white-daisyA number of patients who come to see me about their varicose veins at Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute mention that their mothers suffered with large, painful varicose veins and want to know if the condition was inherited.

Heredity is the number one factor in varicose vein development, but it’s often not the exclusive cause. Varicose veins are slightly more common in women than men, and among women, every pregnancy worsens varicose veins.
Jobs with significant standing are probably the next highest risk factor. We see lots of nurses, teachers, hair dressers, etc. Trauma to the leg can also play a role in the development of varicose veins.

When it comes to preventing varicose veins, there is no magic solution, but I encourage people to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
Walking is one of the best exercises for your veins, as it utilizes your leg muscles to pump blood up the veins and out of the legs. Compression stockings can also be beneficial, especially for people who do lots of standing.
