How Long Does It Take For Acne Scars to Fade?

Acne scars are a common concern that affects people of all ages. Acne scars can develop during puberty or at any time during adulthood, including during pregnancy. While at-home treatments can help you get a handle on your acne, they will usually not do much to treat acne scars. Fortunately, you have effective treatment options that can make a significant difference.

What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne scars form when your body’s healing process replaces acne-damaged skin with scar tissue. This can leave an indentation or atrophic scar, or it can leave a raised or hypertrophic scar. Atrophic scars are the most common type to occur on the face. Squeezing or otherwise disturbing blemishes introduces bacteria and increases the risk of scarring. Severe cystic acne can leave scars even without interference. In addition to scars, acne can leave areas of brown pigmentation or redness.

How Long Does It Take Acne Scars to Fade?

Acne scars usually do not improve without treatment. At-home topical treatments may benefit mild textural concerns. However, those with significant scarring will need more intensive methods. Pigmentation issues may gradually fade over several months to years. They may never go away entirely unless treated. Scars typically last a lifetime, and they can become more noticeable as the skin changes with age.

How are Acne Scars Treated?

Since each person has different acne scars, we will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan. For many people, treatment includes the Opus™ Plasma skin resurfacing system. This combination of radiofrequency and microneedling works to break up scar tissue and bring healthy skin cells to the surface. It also triggers collagen production, smoothing uneven skin texture and making scars less noticeable.

Am I a Good Candidate for Acne Scar Treatment?

If you have acne scars, we have a treatment method that can visibly improve them. Most people make good candidates for Opus™ Plasma skin resurfacing. Ideal candidates have their acne under good control, and their blemishes have had time to heal.

Is There Any Downtime With Acne Scar Treatment?

Most acne scar treatments require little to no downtime. Treatments like Opus™ Plasma or a chemical peel may cause some redness and sensitivity that last a few days. Use sun protection to protect new collagen and reduce pigmentation issues.
