Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?

Injectable treatments rank among the most popular in the world of aesthetics for several reasons. Treatment is minimally invasive, requires no recovery time, and only lasts a few minutes. Not all injectables work the same way, so learn about the differences between two of the most popular types.

Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers: What’s the Difference?

Botox® and have a few things in common. Both injectable treatments reduce lines and wrinkles, and your injector can administer either one quickly and easily. They work very differently, and each one works better for different types of lines and wrinkles.

How Does Botox® Work?

Some lines and wrinkles develop when we laugh, smile, or frown. The facial muscles crease the skin in areas like the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows. Botox® works on these areas by stopping signals from the nerves that control the facial muscles. The muscle stops contracting so the skin can relax, looking smoother and softer. Botox® works best on dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

As the skin ages, it loses collagen and becomes looser. Sagging skin can lead to lines and creases such as the nasolabial folds between the outer corners of the nose and mouth. Dermal fillers like Restylane®, which is our preferred dermal filler, can lift and plump these lines and wrinkles. They can also add volume to areas like the cheeks and lips. Restylane® works using hyaluronic acid, a large molecule that maintains hydration in the skin. This molecule acts by plumping and increasing volume, lifting lines and wrinkles from beneath, adding volume to the skin that can smooth out wrinkles and folds and even make the skin look more youthful.

Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers: Which Lasts Longer?

You can expect results from Botox® to last three to four months, and many people schedule maintenance treatments to keep their smooth, refreshed look. Our Restylane brand of dermal fillers last an average of 6-12 months depending on where you are using them.  Fillers designed for use in or around the lips will have greater flexibility but will often not last as long as firmer fillers designed for the cheeks or deep folds.

Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers: Which is Right for Me?

Most people have dynamic wrinkles caused by muscles and static wrinkles caused by skin laxity. If you have both types of wrinkles, you could benefit from Botox®, dermal fillers, or both. You can safely have both at the same time for an even more relaxed, youthful look. If your primary concerns focus on areas like the brows, Botox® may help, while if you feel more concerned about loose skin and folds, dermal fillers may work better.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox® or Dermal Fillers?

You may be a good candidate for Botox® or dermal fillers if you have lines and wrinkles you want to address. Both products have excellent safety records and received FDA approval for use as injectables. You may not be a candidate if you have had a reaction to a similar product in the past or if you have a skin infection.
