Sclerotherapy vs Laser Vein Therapy

Which is best?

Unsightly spider veins on the legs can be easily treated—and eliminated. These blood vessels form over time by a number of factors including genetics, age, hormonal changes (such as pregnancy, birth control pills or menopause), and a lifestyle that requires extended periods of sitting or standing.

Sclerotherapy Injections – Gold Standard

Sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard for the treatment of spider veins. Even larger blue veins are treated with sclerotherapy, which is the injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the veins, causing them to close and ultimately disappear. This fading occurs over months. Larger clusters of spider veins will need to be treated on more than one occasion to accomplish full fading of the veins. Most patients require a series of 3-5 treatments over the course of several months. The number of treatments will vary with each patient.

Why Some Doctors Will Recommend Laser Treatment for Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is technically a much more difficult treatment than topical laser vein treatment but is considered the gold standard by most vein specialists, as it yields superior results. Surface laser treatment (which should not be confused with endovenous laser ablation for the treatment of large varicose veins) is typically more expensive than sclerotherapy and is generally felt to be more painful.
