The American College of Phlebology estimates that more than 80 million Americans suffer from some form of vein disease. Heredity is the number one cause of varicose veins. Among women, pregnancy is the next greatest risk factor. Most women will relate that their leg vein problems began with a specific pregnancy and worsened in subsequent pregnancies.
While not every woman will experience varicose veins in her life, those women who do notice bulging varicose veins or experience leg discomfort during pregnancy would likely benefit from compression hosiery. These stockings will provide support to the legs as the compression helps to move the blood up the veins and out of the leg. To ensure the correct type and fit, one should be measured. Compression stockings come in various colors, styles and strengths, including knee-high, thigh-high and pantyhose. At my Albuquerque area vein treatment center, Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute, we can provide or prescribe the correct compression stockings for you. For optimal support, pregnant women should be at no less than 20-30mmHg compression level, which will improve swelling and improve microcirculation in the legs. The stockings should be worn all day for full effect, but are not needed when asleep.
If you are pregnant and would like to schedule a fitting for compression stockings to wear throughout your pregnancy, please call the office at 505-848-3461 and we would be happy to assist you. Are you done having babies? Are you tired of those heavy, achy legs and ugly veins? We’ve got a solution for that too.
