Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) affects 10-15% of Americans and is characterized by the irresistible urge to move one’s legs to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. An afflicted patient’s legs become uncomfortable when lying down or sitting – some describe it as a “creeping, tingling or burning sensation”. Moving the legs helps it feel better, but not for long.

RLS can be associated with many problems, such as diabetes/neuropathy, kidney failure, anemia or a vitamin/mineral deficiency. However, diseased veins can also contribute to RLS symptoms. While healthy veins return blood to the heart, blood that pools in unhealthy veins can lead to a buildup of toxic metabolic waste, which can cause RLS symptoms.

At Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute, we begin by performing a Doppler ultrasound test on your affected leg(s) to determine if unhealthy veins may be contributing to your RLS symptoms. According to recent studies, some RLS patients have seen a dramatic drop or elimination of their symptoms after having an endovenous laser ablation, which is the primary procedure used to treat varicose veins.
