What Treatments are Available for Spider Veins?

Spider veins can appear on your legs, face, or other parts of your body, leaving many feeling self-conscious with the “webbed” appearance to their affected areas of skin. Spider vein treatments target these tiny vessels and damage them so your body can naturally eliminate them. You can achieve spider vein clearance on the skin on your face, legs, or anywhere else spider veins occur with the help of a vein specialist, such as Dr. Robert Cutchen.

What are Spider Veins?

Usually cosmetic in nature, spider veins appear as red, blue, or purple threads just under the skin. They form when the pressure inside the smallest veins in the body causes them to stretch and thin. Spider veins are usually less than 1 mm in diameter and have a branched or web-like appearance.  They often form in clusters, and clusters around the ankles can suggest a deeper venous problem, so it’s important to consult with a vein specialist over a dermatologist or med spa that offers sclerotherapy or laser treatments for spider veins.

What Treatments are Available for Spider Veins?

Dr. Cutchen treats most spider veins with the “gold standard” in spider vein treatment – sclerotherapy. This technique uses an FDA-approved injectable treatment that damages the walls of the vein. The vein will collapse, stopping blood flow. The body clears away the remnants of this vein over time.

The VeinWave™ targets tiny veins (usually less than .3 mm) on the face and nose that are too small for sclerotherapy. Dr. Cutchen inserts a hair-thin fiber next to the target vein under the skin. The fiber emits a pulse of radiofrequency energy that damages the vein. The body naturally eliminates the treated veins, leaving your skin with a clearer and smoother appearance.

What is the Difference Between Varicose Veins and Spider Veins?

Spider veins and varicose veins both occur when the walls of a vein become stretched and discolored. Spider veins usually measure 1 mm or less in diameter and look like threads, while varicose veins are generally 3 mm or more and may look raised and rope-like. Varicose veins often indicate a problem with blood flow in the deeper veins of the legs, causing blood to back up into the “feeder” veins that lead to them. Dr. Cutchen has tools to treat these affected veins to redirect blood to flow through healthy ones.

What Results Will I See With Spider Vein Treatment?

Noticeable results from sclerotherapy may take up to a few weeks as the body clears away the damaged vein and its pigments. The treated veins will fade over time and ultimately disappear.  Most patients do require a series of 3-5 sclerotherapy sessions spaced a month apart for full clearance.

Results from the VeinWave™ treatment are immediately visible right after treatment and will continue to improve for several days as the body absorbs the remnants of the targeted vein. Some people will need one VeinWave™ treatment, while others may require two or more to see their desired results
