What Can I Expect After Sclerotherapy Treatments?

Spider veins can be a visual nuisance, even though they may never cause you any pain. When they first appear on the legs or face, you may not think much about them, but as they expand across your body like a web of tiny red or purple lines, they can cause you to be embarrassed, less confident, and make you feel as though you should hide behind clothing or makeup. It is so important to take care of your physical health and that definitely includes caring for your veins. Sclerotherapy treatments have a very high success rate for treating spider veins, making this treatment the favorite of doctors and patients alike. Here is what you can expect after having sclerotherapy injections for your spider veins.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical spider vein treatment that involves the injection of an FDA-approved solution directly into the spider vein via a tiny needle. The injected solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and then to disappear over time. This treatment is done in our office and takes roughly 30 minutes to complete. Larger clusters of spider veins will need more than one treatment to completely disappear from sight.

There is no downtime and minimal discomfort. After the treatments are completed, the treated veins will not come back, although new ones can develop over time.

What Can I Expect After Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy treatments are done in the comfort of our own office here at Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute. Because we are able to treat you here in our office, you can expect to go home immediately after your treatment! Treatment will be administered while you lie back comfortably with your legs elevated. When the short procedure is over, we will have you get up and walk around to prevent the formation of blood clots. At this time you will be placed in compression stockings for the first two-three weeks of your recovery time. There may be some mild bruising following the procedure which will fade in a short period of time. We often tell our spider vein patients that the treatment area will briefly look worse before it looks better, and large clusters of spider veins fade over the course of months – not weeks.

Generally speaking, patients can return to all normal activities the same day, however, strenuous or “pounding” activities, such as running, should be avoided for one week.

It will also be important to avoid sun exposure for extended periods of time as it can cause hyperpigmentation in the treated areas. Sunscreen or light layers of clothing will assist you in protecting the treatment area from the sun.

Approximately 3 to 6 weeks post-treatment you will be able to see the full results of your sclerotherapy treatments and enjoy beautiful skin that is spider-vein-free!
