Spider veins are small, damaged veins that can appear on the surface of the legs or even the face. They usually are not painful or harmful, but some people may experience an achy or heavy feeling in their legs and choose to treat them in order to look and feel their best. One very commonly asked question is about the recovery time for treating spider veins so that patients may properly plan to have the time off from work or have help with their family and other responsibilities during the recovery. Let’s take a look at the two most common treatments for spider veins and their recovery times.

Two Treatment Types

Sclerotherapy Injections:

Sclerotherapy, the gold standard in the removal of spider veins, is a non-surgical spider vein treatment that involves the injection of an FDA-approved solution directly into the spider vein via a tiny needle. The injected solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and then to disappear over time. Larger clusters of spider veins will need to be treated on more than one occasion to accomplish full fading of the veins. Most patients require a series of 3-5 treatments over the course of several months, although the number of required treatments varies with each patient. A personalized treatment plan will be discussed at the time of your vein consultation. Sclerotherapy is one of the lowest-risk cosmetic procedures available, and anesthesia is not required.

Veinwave Laser Treatment

Used primarily to remove tiny spider veins on the face and nose that are too small for sclerotherapy, Veinwave treatment uses an ultra-thin needle that emits radiofrequency energy into the vein in order to damage the vein. This treatment uses thermocoagulation, which is a procedure that causes damage to specific cells by exposing them to electric currents. Essentially, the targeted cells are heated with the current which then causes them to die. Eventually, the damaged cells will be absorbed by the body and flushed away by the body’s own metabolic processes. Results are almost immediate, with continued improvement happening over the next few days and weeks. Though the veins are removed permanently, there is always a chance new veins can form.

What Are The Recovery Times?

Recovery Time For Sclerotherapy:

Sclerotherapy treatment is minimally invasive and is performed right in the office. Generally, normal activities can be resumed immediately after sclerotherapy, and “pounding” activities, such as running, can be resumed one-week post-treatment. Medically prescribed compression stockings are worn for 2-3 after each treatment session. We like to tell our patients that your spider veins will look worse before they look better, During the first two weeks, the veins often look a bit darker and bruising will occur. Over the next four to six weeks, the treated spider veins will slowly fade. Some larger clusters will require additional treatments at that time. Once again, things will briefly look worse and then the treatment area will continue. Large clusters of spider veins fade over the course of months, and not days or weeks.

Recovery Time For VeinWave Laser Treatment:

Because a very small needle is used for the VeinWave procedure, most patients experience very minimal discomfort during the procedure. Patients are allowed to drive themselves home after treatment and resume normal activities immediately afterward. Some patients, especially those with sensitive or fair skin, may see some redness around the treatment site, which dissipates within a few hours.

Bess, the nurse sclerotherapist at Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute, is absolutely the best! She made me feel comfortable and confident throughout my spider vein injection treatment. She was great at tending to my needs and distracting \me during the treatment. I highly recommend seeing her for your spider vein treatment. Also, the office was extremely clean and welcoming. A+ for an overall experience!
