Chronic Venous Insufficiency

The veins in your legs are under stress as they carry blood against gravity back to your heart. These veins can become damaged, leading to a condition called chronic venous insufficiency. This condition can cause discomfort and other symptoms, making prompt treatment important.

What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

As your leg veins move blood, one-way valves keep the flow moving in the right direction. When these valves weaken, blood can pool in the veins, a condition called venous reflux. These damaged varicose veins can contribute to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. Chronic venous insufficiency does not resolve on its own and requires treatment with a vein specialist such as Dr. Robert Cutchen.

Albuquerque Sclerotherapy

Approximately 30% of American adults suffer from vein disease, but only 10% seek medical treatment, according to the Society for Vascular Medicine. Although spider veins are often cosmetic in nature, varicose veins, and the underlying vein disease that causes them, is medical in nature and if left unchecked, will often progress into more advanced conditions. As a matter of fact, many of our patients often admit that they just lived with their varicose veins for years before deciding to seek treatment. Unfortunately, untreated vein disease does not improve on its own – it only worsens. The good news is that most insurance plans cover varicose vein/vein disease treatment, and all treatment is outpatient, performed right in the comfort and convenience of our Albuquerque vein clinic.

As a member of the medical specialty dedicated to providing relief for patients suffering from vein disease, it is disheartening to know that, despite the high prevalence of venous disease (including varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency [CVI]), the vast majority of people with these conditions do not adequately address them. Many have been given misinformation, or are simply not aware that minimally invasive treatments exist that can offer relief of symptoms and potentially stop the progression into CVI. Given the prevailing misconception that varicose veins are only a cosmetic issue, only 1.9 million of the more than 30 million Americans who suffer from varicose veins or CVI seek treatment, according to the American College of Phlebology.
