What Causes Sagging Skin?

As we age, our skin produces less vital proteins that give it support and flexibility. Sagging skin develops when the skin loses its elasticity and structure. As a result, it cannot rebound to its youthful position after stretching. At Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute, we offer non-surgical skin tightening to undo the effects of aging.

What Causes Sagging Skin?

Sagging skin is caused by various factors, including aging, weight loss, and genetics. As we age, the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that give our skin its elasticity, decreases. This can lead to loose, saggy skin. Rapid weight loss can also cause sagging skin because the skin loses its elasticity and is unable to shrink back to its original shape. Sun damage and smoking can also contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to sagging skin.

How Can I Get Rid of Sagging Skin?

You have a variety of options for tightening your sagging skin. Our two favorites are non-surgical, have minimal downtime, and give you long-lasting results. Each has benefits that will help us choose the right one for you.

Opus™ Plasma Skin Resurfacing

Opus™ Plasma is a non-surgical skin tightening treatment that uses plasma energy to tighten loose skin. The treatment works by creating tiny areas of controlled damage on the skin’s surface, which triggers the healing response and promotes new collagen growth. The treatment can also improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scars.

Accent Prime™

Accent Prime™ is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment that uses ultrasound and radiofrequency energy. It can heat the deep layers of skin, stimulating collagen production and tightening loose skin. Along with skin tightening, this treatment can also break up fat cells, allowing the body to remove them over time.

Am I a Good Candidate for Sagging Skin Treatment?

Non-surgical skin tightening treatments, such as Accent Prime and Opus Plasma, are generally safe and effective for most people. However, certain factors can affect whether or not you are a good candidate for these treatments. Good candidates for non-surgical skin tightening typically have the following:

  • Mild to moderate skin laxity
  • Good overall health
  • Realistic expectations for the results of the treatment
  • No active skin infections or skin conditions

Is There Any Downtime With Sagging Skin Treatment?

Non-surgical skin tightening treatments, such as Accent Prime and Opus Plasma, do not require downtime. Patients can typically return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment. You may experience mild redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated area, but these are typically short-lived and fade within a few hours or days. You should avoid direct sun exposure for a few days after the treatment and use sunscreen to protect your skin. You should also avoid using exfoliating or harsh skin care products in the treated area for a few days after the treatment.

Unlike a single plastic surgery procedure, our non-invasive treatments do, however, typically require a series of treatments (usually three Opus Plasma or 3-6 Accent Prime), but involve no pain or downtime.  Your skin can feel a little “spicy” after an Opus Plasma treatment, but this is temporary and much less bothersome than post-surgery pain!
