Meet Dr. Robert Cutchen

In 2009, Dr. Cutchen founded Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute, a clinic dedicated solely to the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease. How Long Does Sclerotherapy Last?

Spider veins can form over time due to a number of factors, including genetics, age, hormonal changes, or lifestyle, such as having a job that requires long periods of standing, If you are one of the millions of people who often hide spider veins under long pants, skirts, or dresses, we have a treatment for you! These problem veins are relatively easy to treat with sclerotherapy.

*Individual results may vary.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is one of the lowest-risk cosmetic procedures available, and anesthesia is not required. It has been used since the 1930s and is considered the gold-standard treatment for varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical spider vein treatment that involves the injection of an FDA-approved solution directly into the spider vein via a tiny needle. The injected solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and then disappear over time. This treatment is done in the comfort of our office and takes roughly 25-30 minutes to complete. Some patients will have larger clusters of spider veins that will need to be treated on more than one occasion to accomplish full fading of the veins. Typically, patients require a series of 3-5 treatments over the course of several months. Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan detailing the anticipated number of treatments required for full clearance.

How Long Does Sclerotherapy Last?

The results of sclerotherapy are permanent. Once the vein tissue turns to scar tissue and dissolves from sight, it is gone for good. The treated spider veins will not come back. Although new spider veins can develop over time, it is important to note that the success rate is over 90% when sclerotherapy is administered by highly skilled providers, such as Dr. Robert Cutchen or our nurse sclerotherapist. This gives our patients peace of mind when considering this treatment.

Will There Be Downtime After My Treatments?

There may be some discomfort and bruising along the vein. Inflammation is also common for several days after the treatment. Ibuprofen can effectively reduce any discomfort you may experience. These side effects will diminish during the weeks following the procedure. Medically prescribed compression stockings should be worn for 2-3 weeks after each treatment session. Generally, normal activities can be resumed immediately after sclerotherapy, but more strenuous activities, such as running or vigorous weight lifting, can usually be resumed one-week post-treatment.

“I could not be happier with the services provided by Dr. Cutchen’s and his entire staff. Everyone treated me with respect and cared for the improvement of my veins and I never felt like “just another number”. Follow up care was great. The office manager is really easy to work with and never caused me any issues. Overall- this is the place to be treated!” *
