What Do Varicose Veins Look Like?

Have you noticed veins on your legs becoming raised, discolored, and more noticeable? These varicose veins occur because blood has backed up and stretched them. Dr. Cutchen and his team treat bothersome varicose veins and the underlying medical conditions that can cause them.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are usually found in the legs. They occur when blood flow through the leg veins slows down and backs up, forcing blood to pool and stretch the vein walls. Blood flowing through the leg veins travels against gravity, assisted by one-way valves that prevent backflow. These valves can weaken, keeping blood from moving out of your legs effectively and leading to varicose veins. This condition is called chronic venous insufficiency

What Do Varicose Veins Look Like?

Varicose veins can look different on everyone. They range widely in size and come in red, blue, and purple colors. They may bulge under the skin, creating an uneven appearance. Varicose veins are often described as looking twisted and rope-like. They may be more or less obvious, depending on your skin tone. If you have varicose veins, Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute recommends an assessment of your venous health even if your varicose veins do not bother you.

Are My Varicose Veins Dangerous?

Varicose veins form due to damaged valves in the Great Saphenous Vein. One of the largest and longest veins in the body, it carries blood from your leg toward the heart. Many factors can cause the valves in this vein to weaken. These weakened valves cannot be repaired. However, proper treatment can restore healthy blood flow. Some people will never have problems with their varicose veins, but you should consider their appearance as a reason to have a vein screening.

What are My Varicose Vein Treatment Options?

Treatments for varicose veins serve two purposes. Some treatments address the visible varicose veins close to the surface. Others treat deeper veins, including the Great Saphenous Vein. Treating these problem veins allows healthy ones to take over their function.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy uses a chemical sclerosant injected into the targeted vein. This chemical causes the walls of the vein to harden and collapse, diverting blood flow to healthy veins. Veins treated with sclerotherapy fade over the next few weeks.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

This treatment works on deep leg veins, including the Great Saphenous Vein. Ultrasound guidance allows Dr. Cutchen to insert a thin fiber that emits energy. The vein walls absorb the energy and collapse. This gold-standard treatment restores normal blood flow.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Visible varicose veins can disappear immediately with this treatment. Tiny incisions allow Dr. Cutchen to use specially designed hooks to remove the problem vein. This treatment works well for veins too large to absorb into the body easily.

Am I a Good Candidate for Varicose Vein Treatment?

If you have varicose veins, you are a good candidate for some form of treatment or management. People with chronic venous insufficiency require this treatment to maintain healthy legs. Others may prefer to treat their problem veins for aesthetic reasons. A vein screening will determine which treatment methods will provide the best results.
