How Frequently Will I Need Laser Hair Removal?

Few of us enjoy spending time shaving, waxing, or threading our unwanted hair. Laser hair removal provides long-lasting hair removal results. This treatment lets you find better uses for the time and money you used to waste on the tedious task of hair removal.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Most of your skin has hair follicles that grow hairs. In some places, this hair is not welcome. Laser hair removal treats your hair follicles to stop them from growing new hairs. Your hair roots contain melanin, a pigment that absorbs the laser energy as heat. The heat damages the follicle, causing it to shed the hair and stop growing new ones. Your Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute team uses the Harmony® XL Pro laser for safe, effective results.

How Frequently Will I Need Laser Hair Removal?

Most people need a series of laser hair removal treatments to achieve their desired results. The average person needs six to eight treatment sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. This timeline allows more follicles to become active so the laser can treat them.  Generally, blonde and white hair does not respond well to treatment. Most patients experience a 10%-25% reduction in hair after the first treatment.

After you finish treatment, you can expect anywhere from months to years of hair-free skin. Hair that does regrow looks pale, thin, and less noticeable. Many people have yearly maintenance treatments to keep away stray hairs. While a strand or two can grow in the treatment area in the months or years after your laser hair removal, they’re thinner and grow sparsely, making them easy to re-treat.  Results vary from patient to patient and can be affected by the color and thickness of your hair, the area treated, and your skin color.

How Should I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

Preparation for laser hair removal will make your treatment safer and more effective. The laser needs a pigmented, intact hair root to target, so you should follow these tips:

  • Avoid waxing, threading, or any treatment that pulls hair out by the root
  • Do not bleach your hair for four weeks before treatment
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning, and artificial tanners
  • You can shave as often as you want and should shave 24 hours before treatment
  • Arrive for treatment with clean skin and no products

These instructions ensure the laser can treat the maximum number of follicles with each treatment. They also protect your skin from becoming too warm during your session.

Is There Downtime After Laser Hair Removal?

You can return to work or other activities immediately after laser hair removal. You may experience some redness, warmth, and tingling for a day or two. Avoid using strongly scented products, scrubs, or peels on your skin for a few days after your session. Avoid sun exposure as much as possible and wear sunscreen to prevent possible damage.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Most people with unwanted hair are good candidates for laser hair removal. The Harmony® XL Pro treats most skin and hair tones safely. People with very light blond, red, or gray hair may need more treatments to achieve results. You should not have laser hair removal if you have an infection or active skin condition in the treatment area.

Dr Cutchen was amazing from start to end. His nursing and office staff was outstanding. By far the best medical professionals in this business.
