Spider Veins 101: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Do you have small, visible veins on your face or legs? These spider veins are not usually not medically harmful but can bother you aesthetically. Spider veins form for several reasons, and your Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute team has several ways to address them.

Spider Veins 101: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Many people, especially women, develop spider veins. This common problem results when small veins become stretched and damaged. As a result, they become larger and visible through the skin. Spider veins usually do not represent a medical condition, but they can be annoying and aesthetically displeasing and may indicate an underlying venous circulation problem. While you can take steps to decrease your likelihood of developing spider veins, you cannot always prevent them.

*Individual results may vary.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins have many underlying causes. While you can avoid some causes of spider veins, others, such as genetics, may cause them to develop regardless of what you do. Common causes of spider veins include:

  • Genetics
  • Hormones, especially those that affect women
  • Sun exposure
  • Stress on the facial veins (such as with a chronic cough)
  • Age-related weakening of the vein walls
  • Long periods of sitting or standing

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity is the best way to keep your circulatory system healthy. Age-related changes to the vein walls occur even in people without other risk factors.

What are the Symptoms of Spider Veins?

Spider veins generally do not have any symptoms. Spider veins related to an underlying venous insufficiency, which usually occur around the ankles, may itch, burn, or feel swollen. Uncomplicated spider veins usually cause no discomfort. Dr. Cutchen can assess your spider veins and determine whether they represent a deeper concern.

What is the Best Treatment for Spider Veins?

Spider veins respond well to treatment, although you may need more than one session. Dr. Cutchen and his team offer treatment for facial and leg spider veins.

VeinWave™

This treatment for facial spider veins uses radiofrequency energy. An ultra-thin needle emits a pulse of energy that damages the vein walls, causing the vein to collapse. The body will absorb this collapsed vein, removing the pigment and eliminating its appearance.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is often used for spider veins on the legs. It uses a solution called a sclerosant injected into the problem veins. The solution collapses the vein walls, allowing your body to absorb them. You may need more than one injection to see your desired results.

What Results Will I See With Spider Vein Treatments?

The results of your spider vein treatments will take time to develop as your body absorbs the treated veins. You will usually start to see results within a few weeks. Spider veins will not grow back, but you can develop new ones in the future. A quick treatment can address these veins if they reoccur.
