When to Worry About Varicose Veins

If you have varicose veins, they might indicate something more concerning than just an aesthetic problem. Varicose veins can be a sign of problems deep within your venous system and should be assessed by a vein specialist, such as Dr. Robert Cutchen.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are visible veins under the skin that often look twisted, bulging, or discolored. The blood in your leg veins must travel upward to return to the heart, and your veins have one-way valves to prevent backflow. When these valves fail, blood can pool in the deep veins and back into smaller ones – a condition known as venous insufficiency. The blood stretches the vein walls, causing the appearance of varicose veins.

When to Worry About Varicose Veins

Anyone who has varicose veins should see a vein specialist, such as Dr. Cutchen, for an assessment. Signs that your varicose veins could indicate a problem include:

  • Throbbing
  • Itching
  • Heaviness
  • Soreness
  • Aching
  • Sores, especially around the ankles
  • Skin issues like thickening and eczema

These signs of venous insufficiency will not go away without treatment of the underlying condition. Treatment can restore healthy blood circulation and typically resolve these issues.

How are Varicose Veins Treated?

Dr. Cutchen often uses several treatments to resolve your varicose veins. While the primary goal is to treat your venous insufficiency, you will also see significant visual improvements.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

This treatment addresses varicose veins by treating the Great Saphenous Vein, which carries blood upward through the leg. A thin fiber inserted into the vein uses pulses of laser energy to collapse the vein walls. Blood flow will transfer to healthier veins, restoring normal circulation.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

After treating the underlying cause of your varicose veins, Dr. Cutchen can use this treatment to remove visible surface veins. It uses tools inserted through tiny incisions to remove the vein, erasing its appearance. It offers an immediate solution to the appearance of unwanted veins.

Endovenous Chemical Ablation

This treatment closes off varicose veins deeper under the skin. A thin needle injects an FDA-approved solution into the problem vein. This solution damages the vein walls and causes them to collapse. The body will absorb these veins over time.
